What is the difference between 420 TVL and 480 TVL security camera resolutions?

Question

What is the difference between 420 TVL and 480 TVL security camera resolutions?

Answer

I have a good article that gets much more in depth on resolutions as it relates to CCTV. You visit that page by following this link to CCTV Resolution.

So not to sound like I am just getting smart. The difference is 60 lines of resolution. Commonly you will see 380, 420, 480 and 540 resolution options on standard CCTV security cameras. 420 cameras are fine to be used in some locations if you are not wanting that much actual detail. It would be much better to go with a 480 or even all the way to 540 TVL. There are many lower cost cameras manufactured in China that have 420 TVL.

The biggest question is what is the application and then a clear determination can be made on which camera should be used.

How to check TVL
by: Faith

is there a way to check TVL of a Camera, if you're not sure, or if you want to double check to make sure you'r getting what you paid for?
thanks

Answer:

It is all in the sensor on the camera. You can view the camera at its highest resolution via your DVR or even recording to see and compare that to other similar cameras to see if it is operating per what the manufacturer as stated.

Basically TVL is television lines, higher the lines better the picture quality but lower the distance coverage.
