CCTV Compression of data in video is very important when it comes to CCTV Security Camera Systems. Analog security cameras transfer information via coax cable in an analog electrical wave signal. That signal will be converted to a digital signal and the DVR which records the signal to a hard disk. The algorithms used in the compression then become very key to the storage size of the files on the hard disk.

There are a few standard compression algorithm in use today in CCTV Security Camera Systems. They include MJPEG, MPEG2, MPEG4 and H.264. Each is actually closely related but many manufacturers have their own variation of each compression algorithm. This makes it difficult to truely compare the benefits of one over the other when looking and DVR storage for analog camera systems.

IP Cameras also work with the various compression algorithms in how they transmit the video data and how it will eventually be stored either on a Hybrid DVR or other storage system.
