CODEC means compressor/decompressor and is any technology used to compress and decompress data. It may be used to convert analog input into digital, and then convert it back to analog. CODECs can be either software applications or hardware components, or both. DVRs use CODECs to compress video streams from security cameras, and then store this compressed data on a hard disk. CODECs are also used by IP Cameras both Standard Defintion and Megapixel. It is used to reduce bandwidth usage and to lower the amount of storage required.
