Access Card and use in CCTV Security Camera Systems

An Access Card is approximately the size of a credit card. These are specially coded cards given to employees and allow them access to secure locations or devices at work. Access cards utilize several technologies such as magnetic strips, Barium Ferrite, proximity (active or passive), and other methods. They are often ‘swiped’ and read by a device that allows the user or employee access. The access information for the access card is actually stored at a central computer where every scan is logged and monitored. Each user on the system can have custom pre-programmed access rights depending on their assigned security level.

Security Access Card

The cards are most often used in companies with more than fifty employees or where much tighter security control is needed. Such as government or military facilities. The cards are tied in with the access control system. These systems are often integrated with CCTV video security as well. This allows an operator or security professional the ability to visually track where some one has been by being able to search the access control system log of which access points were triggered by the individuals card.

The cards can be used with a variety of office equipment as well. This enables higher network security that may be required for high level security in government facilities. Before scanning a document to a folder or email a user will have to "swipe" his card and my even have to enter a pin number as well. This will ensure that only the proper personnel are handling sensitive information.

Proximity cards are becoming more and more popular over the magnetic strip cards. Magnetic strip cards are prone to problems and need to be replaced frequently. Proximity cards do not have to be swipped just simply need to be held near the card reader. The data is transmitted via a low frequency RF signal and allows or denies access.
